Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan inherited its name from the Plains Indians. Kisiskatchewan means the river that flows swiftly. We think it also means Saskatchewan is a great place to come and shoot a movie!

Saskatchewan covers 651,900 square kilometers - more than a quarter million square miles of rolling hills, boreal forest, rapids and lakes, sandhills, valleys, cities, western and ghost towns.

The earth meets the sky in the breadbasket of the world and surrounds you with fields of golden wheat, brilliant yellow canola and pastel blue flax. Magic hour sunsets turn the limitless horizon a brilliant pink. Spectacular thunderclouds and lightening storms, black skies with thousands of stars and harvest moons make up Saskatchewan’s famous sky.

Saskatchewan holds the Canadian record for the most sunshine, averaging 2,540 sunshine hours annually, and boasts 100,000 lakes.

Temperatures vary from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius (70 to 90 Fahrenheit) in the summer, to —5 to —30 degrees Celsius (-20 to —30 Fahrenheit) in the winter. Saskatchewan receives 16 inches of rain and 46 inches of snow annually. Our highest elevation at 1,392 m or (4,566 ft) above sea level is the historic Cypress Hills, home of the infamous Cypress Hills Massacre. The Saskatchewan, Assiniboine and Churchill river systems all empty into Hudson Bay.

Located in the heart of North America, Saskatchewan borders the American states of Montana and North Dakota. Sharing our great land and sky with our one million inhabitants are the home of the RCMP, a dinosaur burial ground, bison herds, black bear, muskrat, elk, fox, white tailed deer, caribou, pronghorn antelope, wolves, prairie dogs, beavers, ostrich farms, cattle ranches, horses, 350 varieties of birds and 68 species of fish.
